Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counselling? Is it different from Therapy?

Counselling is, at a very basic level, one person listening to another and finding ways to enable them to move forward and resolve a particular problem or issue they have. In the UK, the words counselling and therapy are often used interchangeably. A psychotherapist might have more training (but not necessarily).

I've heard of CBT, what different types of counselling are there?

There are many different theoretical approaches to counselling, and counsellors can specialise in different areas. Talking Therapies mainly uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other people use TA (transactional analysis), psychoanalysis, person-centred counselling, play or art therapy or a mixture of approaches.

I use a person-centred approach integrated with a range of creative methods.

Which one works the best?

Most research suggests that the type of counselling you engage in is not the important factor. What matters most is the relationship you build together with your counsellor.

If I talk to you, will you tell anyone what I said?

What is discussed in counselling is confidential, unless I have concerns that you might seriously harm yourself or another person or could be involved in serious criminal activity. If you are a young person, I won't be telling your parents what you've talked about, even if they've paid for the sessions (unless I have concerns for your safety as above).

I've heard that you have supervision? What does that mean?

All counsellors have supervisors who oversee their work and make sure that counselling is safe and helpful for clients. We may talk about parts of the work but would ensure you would not be identifiable to the supervisor.

How accessible is the building you use?

I can usually book a space that meets your needs if you wish to attend face-to-face counselling.
